Gold Editorial – London morning, Oct 16: The 4,037–4,149 Base Is Holding – Buy Pullbacks, Eyes on 4,200 → 4,300 → 4,400

The view: Gold is gradually confirming a solid base at 4,037–4,149 – this week's 4,074 low held and spot is back near 4,185. That sets up a reversal toward 4,200, 4,300 and 4,400, so selling here calls for real caution.

The charts: The weekly holds above the MA89 at 3,988 and the BB90 mid at 3,975 with RSI at 44 – room to run. On the 3H/2H/45m, MACD has crossed up and RSI is 58–61. The 4H has broken its long down-channel and is coiling under 4,190–4,200; a 4H/daily close above 4,200–4,217 (week high 4,217.4) opens 4,300–4,400, while a break of 4,147 calls for caution.

The Street: UBS (Oct 9) sees $4,600 by December and calls dips toward $4,000 a chance to add; Goldman (Sep 18) holds $4,650 for end-2026 and $5,400 for end-2027; the World Gold Council reports $10 billion of September ETF inflows and 23 tons of PBoC buying.

The trade: Buy pullbacks into the bases (4,147–4,160, deeper 4,037–4,149) and trade with the uptrend; shorts only as quick scalps. Expect sharp swings.

Gold 4-hour chart Oct 16: main base 4,037–4,149, buy zone 4,150–4,160, stop 4,137, targets 4,200 → 4,217 → 4,300
Bias: 🔺 Bullish – 4,037–4,149 base firming; buy pullbacks, shorts only as scalps
🟢 BUY zone 4,150–4,160 | SL 4,137 | TP1 4,200 → TP2 4,217 → TP3 4,300
⚠️ Key risk: A 4H/daily close above 4,200–4,217 opens 4,300–4,400; a break of 4,147 calls for caution. Expect sharp swings.

Arrows: vs. prior close

The 10-year Treasury yield dipped as low as 5.038%, a three-week low (WSJ), and the dollar is headed for its first weekly loss in five, with the DXY near 102.07 as AI stocks wobble (CNBC). Fed Chair Warsh offered no new signal, saying he doesn't prejudge meetings, while Middle East tensions keep a haven bid alive (FXStreet). The Street is still constructive: UBS sees $4,600 by December and calls dips toward $4,000 a chance to add; Goldman holds $4,650 for end-2026 and $5,400 for end-2027; global gold ETFs took in $10 billion in September to a record 4,256 metric tons, and China's central bank added 23 tons (World Gold Council). Counterpoints: FedWatch prices about 89% odds of a December hike, and several Indian funds halted bulk gold-ETF subscriptions (CNBC).

🧭 Plan & scenarios

  • The data: 10-year yield at a three-week low (5.038%), dollar headed for its first weekly loss in five, no new signal from Warsh.
  • The tape: week low 4,074 → week high 4,217.4 → coiling near 4,185 under 4,190–4,200.
  • Why: softer yields and dollar, haven flows (AI stocks, Middle East), ETFs and central banks still buying; UBS and Goldman both target above $4,600.
  • Levels: base 4,037–4,149, near-term floor 4,147–4,160; a 4H/daily close above 4,200–4,217 opens 4,300–4,400.
  • Risk: FedWatch ~89% odds of a December hike, a yield rebound; below 4,147 means caution, below 4,037 invalidates the view.
