Gold, Oct 16 London: new day high at 4,188, dips hold 4,178 – buy pullbacks at 4,160–4,167
Price action: Spot gold was ~4,178 at 2:45 AM ET, dipped only to 4,176.50 (2:55 AM ET) and then ran to a fresh day high of 4,188.80 at 3:30 AM ET as Europe opened. A bounce in Treasury yields pulled it back to 4,178.10 (4:15 AM ET), and it was holding 4,183–4,185 at 4:47 AM ET. A tight ~12-point range over two hours.
Why it moved: The dollar slid to 101.73 on the DXY (3:35 AM ET) as European stocks opened higher, lifting gold to the day high. The 10-year then climbed from 5.073% to 5.102% (4:15 AM ET), capping bullion under 4,190. No high-impact data in the window.
Versus the 2:45 AM ET plan: Right on direction: the up-channel held above 4,170 and price cleared R1 at 4,184 as expected. But there was no dip into the 4,158–4,165 buy zone (low 4,176.50) and no rally into the 4,198–4,208 sell zone (high 4,188.80) – nothing filled, no new TP or stop hits. Earlier closed calls stand in the log: Thursday's London short +21 points, the 6:47 AM ET short +12, the Asian short +21, the New York short −8.

Arrows: vs. prior close
Risk appetite is back: the STOXX 600 is up ~0.5% at 643.6 and on track for its best week since August (Reuters), S&P futures +0.2%, VIX 16.0. A softer dollar – DXY ~101.78 (−0.27%) – lifted gold to a day high, but the 10-year bounced back to 5.098%, with FedWatch at ~87% odds of an October hold after a week of hot inflation data (CNBC). Brent is near $105.10 (−0.8%) even with Hormuz flows at ~68% of normal (Reuters); Trump says Iran asked the U.S. to stop strikes and talks are under way, but left more strikes on the table (Middle East Eye).

🧭 Plan & scenarios
- The data: no high-impact releases in the window; DXY slid to 101.73 then firmed to 101.80, the 10-year went 5.073% → 5.102%; FedWatch ~87% odds of an October hold (CNBC).
- The tape: ~4,178 at 2:45 AM ET → 4,176.50 (2:55 AM) → 4,188.80 day high (3:30 AM) → 4,178.10 (4:15 AM) → ~4,183 at 4:47 AM ET.
- Why: a softer dollar lifted gold, a yield bounce capped it; with 45m–4H all in the upper half of BB90, dips are buys.
- Levels: resistance 4,188 → 4,197–4,200 → 4,203–4,212 (sell zone) → 4,217; support 4,178 → 4,167–4,160 (buy zone) → 4,153–4,147 → the 4,037–4,149 base.
- Risk: no high-impact U.S. data today and the Fed blackout starts Saturday; Friday profit-taking, Iran/Hormuz headlines and AI-stock jitters can whip price – only a 4H/daily close above 4,200–4,217 opens 4,300.
