Gold Tags 4,191 and Stalls With the 10-Year at 5.1% – Buy the Dip, Don't Chase

Overnight: Thursday's September PPI hit at 8:30 AM ET and ran far hotter than expected: +1.3% m/m (est. 0.6%), core +0.7%, and +6.3% y/y – the biggest gain since 2022 – with retail sales up 0.8% (est. 0.3%). Gold got knocked down to 4,138.10 at 8:35 AM ET as the DXY spiked to 102.26 (8:40 AM ET). The flush didn't last: the 10-year yield rolled over to 5.037% by 10:00 AM ET, AI names took a beating (Nvidia −1.84%, Dell −6.8%), and between 3:00 and 4:00 PM ET gold ripped from 4,157 to 4,176.90. It finished the New York day at 4,170.10 (5:55 PM ET). Anyone who chased the PPI short under 4,140 got squeezed.

Asian session: Gold opened the overnight session at 4,170.20 at 6:00 PM ET and drifted to the Asian low of 4,147.80 at 9:35 PM ET as the DXY firmed to 102.09 and the 10-year climbed to 5.096%. Buyers came back at 10:20 PM ET: in 35 minutes gold ran from 4,153 to 4,178.30 (10:55 PM ET). Fed Chair Kevin Warsh took the stage at 11:30 PM ET; gold wobbled to 4,163.50 (11:40 PM ET) and bounced right back once it was clear he had nothing new – "I don't prejudge meetings." The Asian high of 4,184.10 came at 12:05 AM ET, right as the DXY bottomed at 101.82. Asia closed at 4,176.50 (2:55 AM ET): high 4,184.10, low 4,147.80, a ~$36 range.

London morning: London opened at 4,176.70 at 3:00 AM ET. Gold tagged 4,188.80 at 3:30 AM ET and then a day high of 4,191.30 at 5:15 AM ET. That's where it ran out of gas: the 10-year jumped from 5.073% to 5.102% (4:15 AM ET) and stayed there, and gold slipped to 4,175.20 at 6:05 AM ET – right on the 38.2% retracement of the 4,147.80 → 4,191.30 leg – before bouncing to 4,184. At 6:50 AM ET spot sits near 4,178 (CNBC 4,177.90; gold-api.com 4,178.90), up about $8 from the New York close. The tell: the DXY slid further to 101.58 (6:40 AM ET) and gold didn't follow – yields are in the driver's seat. Neither of this morning's buy setups (4,150–4,160 and 4,160–4,167) filled, and the 4,203–4,212 short never triggered; the dip stopped at 4,175.20. I'd rather miss a move than chase one.

Why gold rose – and why it stalled: First, a softer dollar: the DXY fell from 102.26 overnight to 101.61 (−0.41% on the day) and is headed for its first weekly loss in five; sterling hit a three-week high on solid UK data (CNBC). That's what lifted gold to 4,191. Second, the Fed: Warsh kept his cards close, so markets still price ~87% odds of an October hold but ~91% odds of a December hike (CME FedWatch via CNBC) – higher-for-longer remains the long-run headwind. Third, yields: the 10-year at 5.102% and the 2-year at 4.751% are still elevated after 3.7% CPI and 6.3% PPI; that's the brake that kept gold under 4,191 even as the dollar fell. Fourth, oil and the war: Brent is near $105.90 with Strait of Hormuz traffic only ~68% of normal (Reuters); President Trump says Iran asked for a halt to strikes and talks are under way, but he hasn't ruled out more (Middle East Eye) – expensive oil keeps inflation fears alive. Fifth, sentiment: the 20 biggest AI and chip stocks have shed more than $1 trillion this week and CoreWeave's five-year CDS briefly topped 1,140 bps (CNBC), yet European stocks are up today (STOXX 600 +0.7%) and the VIX is 16.1 – no panic bid to force a breakout. Longer term, ANZ says a retreat in yields and the dollar would pave the way for gold above $5,000 in 2027 (CNBC).

Today's main event: There's no high-impact U.S. data on Friday's ForexFactory calendar: 8:30 AM ET import prices (est. +0.9%, prior 0.7%), 9:15 AM ET industrial production (+0.4%, prior 0.0%) and capacity utilization (76.5%) – all low impact – plus the federal budget balance at 2:00 PM ET. The Fed enters its blackout period Saturday ahead of the Oct. 27–28 meeting, so today's tape will trade off yields, the dollar, Iran/Hormuz headlines and Friday profit-taking. Level to watch for the weekly close: last Friday's ~4,193.80 – settle above it and the week is green; below it, a small weekly loss (CNBC had gold −0.2% on the week at 4,184).

45-minute technicals: At 4,178, gold is above the 45m MA34 (4,164.60), MA89 (4,147.00) and BB90 mid (4,147.40); upper band 4,203.40, lower band 4,091.50. The 45m MACD is still positive (8.1/7.9) but the histogram has shrunk from +1.5 (4:15 AM ET) to +0.2, and RSI(14) is 56 – momentum is flattening. Higher timeframes: the 1H/2H/3H/4H all trade in the upper half of BB90 (mids 4,154.30 / 4,153.10 / 4,154.50 / 4,156.20; MA89 4,153–4,156), and the 4H MACD has crossed up with a +5.8 histogram → the primary trend is up. H79 filter: the 5m has slipped under its mid (4,179.20) with RSI at 41, and the 15m MACD has turned negative with price sitting on its MA34 (4,178.40) → this is a pullback inside an uptrend, which typically finds buyers at the 45m MA34 / 15m MA89 / 61.8% Fib cluster at 4,164–4,166, or deeper at the higher-timeframe mid/MA89 cluster at 4,153–4,156. Daily pivots (Thursday's session: high 4,176.90 · low 4,099.90 · close 4,170.10): P 4,149 · R1 4,198 · R2 4,226 · S1 4,121. Key highs/lows: week high 4,199.20 (Monday), day high 4,191.30, Asian low 4,147.80, week low 4,074.10 (Wednesday). Fibonacci of the 4,147.80 → 4,191.30 leg: 38.2% 4,174.70 (held at 6:05 AM ET), 50% 4,169.50, 61.8% 4,164.40, 78.6% 4,157.10. The 4,200–4,210 sell zone lines up R1 4,198, the 4,199 week high and the 45m/1H/4H upper bands at 4,203–4,209 – scalp territory only. My read: bulls still own this tape, but anyone buying 4,185–4,191 right now is standing in the wrong spot, with stops sitting just under 4,175. I'm waiting for price to come to me, entering only on a green 45m/1H close in the zone – and if it never comes, I'm fine missing it.

Gold 45-minute chart Oct 16: day high 4,191.30, pullback to 4,175; buy zone 4,155–4,165, sell zone 4,200–4,210
Bias: 🔺 Bullish – stalled at 4,191 with the 10-year at 5.1%; buy the dip, shorts only small
🔴 SELL zone 4,200–4,210 | SL 4,220 | TP1 4,165 → TP2 4,154
🟢 BUY zone 4,155–4,165 | SL 4,145 | TP1 4,185 → TP2 4,200
⚠️ Key risk: No high-impact U.S. data today and the Fed goes quiet Saturday – price trades off yields, the dollar and Iran headlines. Don't chase 4,185–4,191; buy only on a green 45m/1H close in the zone, a 1H close under 4,147 cancels the long; shorts are counter-trend, keep size small.

Arrows: vs. prior close

Gold is caught between two forces today, and yields are winning. A softer dollar – the DXY down to 101.58, a session low and headed for its first weekly loss in five (CNBC) – pushed gold to 4,191. But the 10-year bounced back to 5.10% after a week of hot inflation data (September PPI +6.3% y/y), and FedWatch still prices ~91% odds of a December hike (CNBC) – so the dollar kept falling and gold didn't follow. Warsh gave nothing away and the Fed goes quiet Saturday; Iran/Hormuz risk (Brent near $105.90, Reuters) and the AI-stock rout (CNBC) keep a haven floor under the metal. My view: the primary trend is still up, but as long as the 10-year holds above 5.1%, gold needs to pull back into 4,155–4,165 to reload; only a 4H close above 4,200 opens 4,226 and then 4,300. The play: don't chase 4,185–4,191 – buy the dip.

🧭 Plan & scenarios

  • Overnight: September PPI +1.3% m/m (est. 0.6%), +6.3% y/y – gold flushed to 4,138.10, then ripped to 4,176.90 and settled at 4,170.10.
  • The tape: Asian low 4,147.80 (9:35 PM ET) → Asian high 4,184.10 (12:05 AM ET) → day high 4,191.30 (5:15 AM ET) → 4,175.20 (6:05 AM ET) → ~4,178 (6:50 AM ET).
  • Why: a softer dollar lifted gold, a 5.10% 10-year capped it; Warsh gave nothing away, FedWatch ~91% odds of a December hike.
  • Levels: resistance 4,191 → 4,198–4,200 → 4,203–4,210 (sell zone); support 4,175 → 4,164–4,169 → 4,153–4,157 → 4,147.
  • Risk: no high-impact U.S. data today and the Fed blackout starts Saturday; Friday profit-taking and Iran/Hormuz headlines can whip price.
