H79 Gold Plan – New York Pre-Market, Oct 16: Dip to 4,171 Inside an Uptrend – Buy 4,162–4,169, Sell 4,200–4,210

How today's plans played out: None of today's four setups filled: the 4,158–4,165 buy (2:45 AM ET), 4,150–4,160 (4:45 AM ET), 4,160–4,167 (4:47 AM ET) and 4,155–4,165 (6:47 AM ET) – the deepest dip was 4,171.40 at 8:00 AM ET. The 4,198–4,212 sell zones never traded either; the day high stopped at 4,191.30 (5:15 AM ET). No win, no loss. I had the direction right – gold went up – but I set the buy zones too deep. The lesson: when the 45m through 4H all sit in the upper half of BB90, pullbacks tend to stop at the 38.2–50% retracement, rarely at 78.6%. So this morning's buy zone moves up to the 50–61.8% cluster.

From the 6:47 AM ET note into the New York open: Gold was near 4,178 at 6:47 AM ET. It bounced to 4,181.30 at 7:15 AM ET and then got sold steadily. The 7:15–8:00 AM ET 45-minute candle closed red at 4,171.60, the lowest since late Asia. The 4,171.40 low at 8:00 AM ET sits right above the 50% retracement (4,169.50) of the 4,147.80 → 4,191.30 leg, and gold has bounced to 4,176–4,177 at 8:25 AM ET (CNBC 4,176.20; gold-api.com 4,177.60). Anyone who chased 4,185–4,191 in London is underwater, and their stops sit around 4,170 – exactly the kind of pocket this market likes to sweep before the next leg.

Why gold is where it is: It's a tug-of-war between the dollar and yields. The dollar is soft: DXY 101.72 (−0.28% from the New York close), a day low of 101.58, and on track for its first weekly loss after three weekly gains (Reuters) – that's what lifted gold to 4,191. But the 10-year Treasury yield has bounced back to 5.102% (day high 5.123%) with the 2-year at 4.746%, and that's the brake that stopped gold from holding the high. On the Fed, Warsh gave nothing away and CME FedWatch shows an 87% chance of a hold in October (CNBC); the blackout starts Saturday ahead of the Oct 27–28 FOMC. Brent sits near $105.90 with Iran saying it's stepping up strikes around Hormuz (CNBC), which keeps a geopolitical bid under gold. S&P futures are up 0.2% and the VIX is 16.0 – no panic, so no rush into havens. My read: the drop from 4,191 is a technical pullback inside an uptrend, not a reversal.

The New York game plan: Calendar (ForexFactory, ET): no high-impact U.S. data today. 8:30 AM import prices (est. +0.9%, prior 0.7%); 9:15 AM industrial production (est. +0.4%, prior 0.0%) and capacity utilization (est. 76.5%, prior 76.3%); 9:30 AM cash open; 2:00 PM federal budget balance (est. −$34.7B, prior −$166.8B); 4:00 PM TIC flows; 5:00 PM weekly close. Base case (~60%): gold dips into 4,162–4,169, runs the stops of the London chasers and turns higher – buy on a green 45m/1H close in the zone, targeting 4,185 and then 4,198 (R1, Oct 13 high). Alternative (~25%): no dip, and gold takes out 4,191 after the cash open – don't chase it; watch 4,200–4,210: a red 45m/1H close there is a small-size short, but a 1H close above 4,210 kills the short and I'll look to buy a retest of 4,198–4,203 toward 4,226 (R2). Bear case (~15%): a 1H close under 4,153 (1H BB90 mid) – step aside; next stops 4,147 and 4,121 (S1). Weekly marker: last Friday's close was about 4,193.80 – a weekly close above it turns the week green.

Technicals: Big picture (primary trend up): the 45m, 1H, 2H, 3H and 4H all trade in the upper half of BB90 (mids 4,147 / 4,154 / 4,153 / 4,154 / 4,156); MACD is positive on the 2H/3H/4H with histograms at +2.9 / +5.0 / +5.1. Short term (the pullback): the 5m is below its mid at 4,179 with MA34 (4,177.90) under MA89 (4,179.50) and RSI 47; the 15m is below MA34 at 4,179 but above its MA89/mid at 4,167 with a negative MACD; the 30m holds above MA34 at 4,172 and MA89 at 4,148.50. The 45m/1H MACD just crossed down slightly (histograms −1.0 / −0.8) with RSI 54 / 57 – momentum is resting, not broken. Under the H79 rule (mirrored for an uptrend), a 5m/15m down-channel is just a pullback that tends to stall at the cluster of the 45m MA34 4,165.60 · 4H MA34 4,165.10 · 15m mid/MA89 4,167 · 50–61.8% Fib 4,169.50/4,164.40 – hence the 4,162–4,169 buy zone. The 4,200–4,210 sell zone lines up with the upper BB90 on the 45m (4,202), 3H (4,208.50), 1H (4,209) and 4H (4,209), plus R1 4,198 and the Oct 13 high of 4,197. Daily pivots from the Oct 15 session (high 4,176.90 · low 4,099.90 · close 4,170.20): P 4,149 · R1 4,198 · R2 4,226 · S1 4,121. My stance: buyers are still in control; I wait for price to come to my level, and I'm fine missing the trade if it doesn't.

Gold 45-minute chart Oct 16, New York pre-market: pullback from 4,191 to 4,171; buy zone 4,162–4,169, sell zone 4,200–4,210
Bias: 🔺 Bullish – 45m–4H above the BB90 mid, 5m/15m pulling back from 4,191; buy the dip, shorts only small
🔴 SELL zone 4,200–4,210 | SL 4,220 | TP1 4,185 → TP2 4,170
🟢 BUY zone 4,162–4,169 | SL 4,146 | TP1 4,185 → TP2 4,198
⚠️ Key risk: No high-impact U.S. data today – gold trades off the 10-year (5.10%), the dollar and Iran/Hormuz headlines. Buy only on a green 45m/1H close in the zone; a 1H close under 4,153 cancels the long, above 4,210 cancels the short. Today's earlier setups didn't fill (dip low 4,171.40, high 4,191.30) – no win, no loss.

Arrows: vs. prior close

This morning is a tug-of-war between the dollar and yields. A soft dollar (DXY 101.72, on track for its first weekly loss after three weekly gains – Reuters) lifted gold to 4,191, but the 10-year bouncing back to 5.10% took the air out and gold has pulled back to 4,171. There's no high-impact U.S. data today, FedWatch shows an 87% chance of an October hold (CNBC), and Brent sits near $106 with Iran stepping up strikes around Hormuz – this is a technical pullback, not a reversal. My view: the primary trend is still up; the levels that matter are 4,153 (lose it and I'm wrong) and 4,210 (clear it and 4,226 opens); the job is to wait for 4,162–4,169 and buy, not chase.

🧭 Plan & scenarios

  • Today's calendar (ForexFactory): no high-impact U.S. data – 8:30 AM ET import prices (est. +0.9%), 9:15 AM ET industrial production (+0.4%) and capacity utilization (76.5%), 2:00 PM ET federal budget; 5:00 PM ET weekly close.
  • The tape: 4,147.80 Asian low (9:35 PM ET) → 4,191.30 day high (5:15 AM ET) → 4,171.40 dip (8:00 AM ET, near the 50% Fib) → 4,176.20 at 8:25 AM ET.
  • Base case (~60%): a dip into 4,162–4,169 runs the chasers' stops and turns up – buy on a green 45m/1H close, TP 4,185 → 4,198.
  • Alternative (~25%): gold clears 4,191 after the 9:30 AM ET open – don't chase; a red close at 4,200–4,210 is a small short; a 1H close above 4,210 flips me to buying a 4,198–4,203 retest toward 4,226.
  • Bear case (~15%): a 1H close under 4,153 – step aside; 4,147 → 4,121 next. Risk: a 10-year push above 5.12% or Iran/Hormuz headlines can whip price.
