H79 Gold Plan – New York Session, Oct 16: V-Bounce 4,155→4,190 After IP – Buy 4,168–4,176, Sell 4,200–4,210
How the 8:15 AM ET plan played out: The 4,162–4,169 buy filled at 8:55 AM ET (tagged 4,163.80). The post–industrial-production flush low was 4,154.70 at 9:20 AM ET – still above the 4,146 stop. TP1 4,185 filled at 9:50 AM ET; TP2 4,198 is still open (post-entry high 4,190.20 at 10:10 AM ET). The 4,200–4,210 sell never traded. Score so far: partial win (TP1), runner still working toward TP2 if the bounce holds. Lesson: when the 45m–4H sit in the upper half of BB90, a low-impact data flush often sweeps the 61.8–78.6% pocket and V-bounces – waiting for the dip beat chasing.
From the 8:30 AM ET data through the first 30 minutes of cash: 8:30 AM ET September import prices +1.1% (hotter than the ~0.8–0.9% consensus – InvestingLive): gold poked 4,180 then got sold steadily into the buy zone. 9:15 AM ET industrial production +0.7% (est. 0.4%) and capacity utilization 76.9% (est. 76.5% – Il Sole / Fed G.17): a straight flush to 4,154.70. 9:30 AM ET cash open – the low held, and the 9:30–10:15 AM ET 45-minute candle opened 4,159.80 and closed green at 4,188.30 (high 4,190.20). Anyone who chased the short into the data low is underwater; their stops around 4,175–4,180 got run on the V-bounce. At 10:13 AM ET CNBC XAU= printed 4,188.30 (+18 / +0.43%); gold-api.com 4,190.50.
Why gold is where it is: This morning's prints ran hot versus forecasts but none were high-impact – the market already digested this week's CPI/PPI. The real drive is the dollar and yields: DXY 101.65 (−0.40%, day low 101.58) on track for a weekly loss; the 10-year eased to 5.081% (day high 5.133%) after Warsh gave no October hike signal – Kitco has October hike odds near 15% and December near 89%. S&P futures −0.1%, VIX 16.1 – no panic. Brent $105.40 with Hormuz still tense (Kitco) keeps a geopolitical bid under gold. My read: the 4,155 flush was a stop-run inside an uptrend, not a reversal; buyers just proved it with that green 45m after the cash open.
The New York session game plan: Don't chase 4,188–4,190. Base case (~55%): a dip into 4,168–4,176 (38.2–61.8% Fib of the 4,154.70→4,190.20 leg = 4,176.60/4,172.40/4,168.20 · 45m MA34 4,167 · 15m mid/MA89 4,168) – buy on a green 45m or 1H close in the zone, TP1 4,198 (R1) then TP2 4,226 (R2). Alternative (~30%): no dip, and gold clears 4,191 into 4,200–4,210 – don't chase the long; a red 45m/1H close in the zone is a small counter-trend short; a 1H close above 4,210 kills the short and I'll buy a 4,198–4,203 retest toward 4,226. Bear case (~15%): a 1H close under 4,155 (post-data low · 1H BB mid) – step aside; next 4,147 then 4,121 (S1). Still ahead (ForexFactory): 2:00 PM ET federal budget; 4:00 PM ET TIC; 5:00 PM ET weekly close – a weekly close above last Friday's ~4,193.80 turns the week green.
Technicals: Big picture (primary trend up): the 45m/1H/2H/3H/4H all trade in the upper half of BB90 (mids 4,147 / 4,155 / 4,154 / 4,154 / 4,156); 2H–4H MACD is firmly positive (histograms +3.3 / +5.8 / +5.9). Short term: the 5m sits above its mid at 4,179 with MA34 4,174 under MA89 4,179 and RSI 62; the 15m MACD just crossed up (hist +0.8), RSI 58; 30m/45m/1H histograms are still slightly negative but narrowing (−0.7 / −1.2 / −0.3) – momentum resting after the V, not broken. Under the H79 rule (uptrend mirror), a 5m/15m dip is just a pullback that tends to stall at the 45m MA34 4,167 · 38–62% Fib 4,177/4,172/4,168 · 15m mid 4,168 cluster – hence the 4,168–4,176 buy zone. The 4,200–4,210 sell zone lines up with upper BB90 on the 45m (4,202), 3H (4,209), 1H (4,210) and 4H (4,210), plus R1 4,198 and the Oct 13 high of 4,197. Daily pivots from the Oct 15 session (high 4,176.90 · low 4,099.90 · close 4,170.10): P 4,149 · R1 4,198 · R2 4,226 · S1 4,121. My stance: buyers are in control; I wait for price to come to me, and I'm fine missing it if it doesn't.

Arrows: vs. prior close
This morning's story is a V-bounce after hot-but-low-impact data. Import prices +1.1% and industrial production +0.7% (both hotter than forecast) ran the stops down to 4,155, but a soft dollar (DXY 101.65, −0.40%) and the 10-year easing to 5.08% after Warsh gave no October hike signal (Kitco: ~15% October / ~89% December) sent gold straight back to 4,190. No high-impact U.S. data left today – this is a stop-run then continuation inside an uptrend. My view: the primary trend is still up; the levels that matter are 4,155 (lose it and I'm wrong) and 4,210 (clear it and 4,226 opens); the job is not to chase 4,188 – wait for 4,168–4,176 to buy, or scalp 4,200–4,210.

🧭 Plan & scenarios
- This morning's prints (actual): 8:30 AM ET import prices +1.1% (hot); 9:15 AM ET industrial production +0.7% / capacity 76.9% (hotter than forecast). No high-impact U.S. data. Still ahead: 2:00 PM ET federal budget; 4:00 PM ET TIC; 5:00 PM ET weekly close.
- The tape: 8:15 AM ET buy filled at 8:55 → 4,154.70 flush low (9:20) → cash-open V-bounce → 4,190.20 (10:10) → 4,188.30 at 10:13 AM ET. TP1 4,185 filled; TP2 4,198 and the 4,200–4,210 sell still open.
- Base case (~55%): a dip into 4,168–4,176 – buy on a green 45m/1H close, TP 4,198 → 4,226.
- Alternative (~30%): gold clears 4,191 into 4,200–4,210 – don't chase the long; a red close is a small short; a 1H close above 4,210 flips me to buying a 4,198–4,203 retest toward 4,226.
- Bear case (~15%): a 1H close under 4,155 – step aside; 4,147 → 4,121 next. Risk: a 10-year push back above 5.12% or Hormuz headlines can whip price.
