A Qatar–Pakistan U.S.–Iran peace proposal sends gold up $22 to 4,153.50 – and the move fully unwinds after a diplomat says a deal isn't close

War & geopoliticsNeutralOct 20, 10:15 AM ET (report) → 10:30 AM ET (4,153.50 high) → 12:15 PM ET (gold back near 4,124)

The New Arab (Al-Araby Al-Jadeed): Qatar and Pakistan put a 'middle-ground' proposal to Iran and the U.S. – Iran would allow a confidential IAEA visit to its nuclear sites, and Washington would let Tehran collect interest on $6 billion in frozen funds held in Qatar; Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir delivered it in Tehran. Bloomberg: a diplomat involved in the talks said reports that a deal is close are inaccurate; gold swung between a 0.4% gain and a 0.7% loss. On CNBC's XAU= feed, spot ran from 4,130 to 4,153.50 in 15 minutes (10:15–10:30 AM ET), then settled back into 4,120–4,126. Meanwhile the IRGC said two tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia continued.

Gold impact: Near term: peace headlines pull oil and yields lower and gold pops – but without confirmation the move fades fast, so stay flat for the first 15–30 minutes after a headline. Longer term: a real peace deal would cut crude and inflation expectations and take hike pressure off the Fed – that's the big bullish catalyst for gold; a drawn-out war keeps oil above $100 and yields high.

CNBC: the 30-year is 5.426% and the 2-year rose more than 2 basis points to 4.785%; September housing starts came in at 1.22 million (1.30 million expected). Investing.com Fed Rate Monitor (CME fed funds futures, Oct 20, 7:25 PM ET): Oct. 27-28 – hold 83.9% / quarter-point hike 16.1% (prior day 81.6%/18.4%); Dec. 8-9 – hold 13.5% · 4.00%–4.25% 73.0% · 4.25%–4.50% 13.5%. Reuters, citing CME FedWatch: 92% odds of a December hike. StoneX's Bob Haberkorn: '$4,000 is a big level' to watch. December gold futures settled at $4,142.60 (−0.4%). The Fed is in its blackout, and Wednesday has no major data.

Gold impact: Near term: a rising 2-year says the market hasn't let go of a December hike – gold rallies stay capped. Longer term: a 10-year around 5.1% is still gold's biggest headwind; the trend only turns when inflation cools or the Fed signals it's done.

Brent tags a five-month high at $111.99, then settles at $108.79 (−0.7%); API shows a 4.93 million-barrel U.S. crude draw

CNBC: expiring November WTI fell 1.8% to $101.79 after trading as high as $110.48; December WTI is around $97.80–$98.30; December Brent settled at $108.79 (−0.7%) after a $111.99 session high. Reuters: Iran's President Pezeshkian met Pakistan's army chief on mediation. EIA data is due at 10:30 AM ET today.

Gold impact: Near term: crude above $100 keeps inflation expectations and yields elevated – a headwind for gold through the Fed channel; another inventory draw supports oil. Longer term: as long as Hormuz stays choked, energy inflation keeps the Fed hawkish and gold struggles to break out.

Wall Street: the Dow jumps 1% to 52,495.88, the S&P 500 adds 0.3%, the Nasdaq is flat – money is chasing earnings, not havens

AP: the Dow rose 529.85 points (+1.02%) to 52,495.88; the S&P 500 gained 21.84 points (+0.28%) to 7,712.57; the Nasdaq slipped 6.07 points (−0.02%) to 26,424.82 on strong reports from Equifax and Hasbro. Tonight on CNBC: Nasdaq futures +0.7%, S&P futures +0.24%; DXY 101.80 (+0.09%), up from Tuesday's lowest level since Oct. 1 near 101.5.

Gold impact: Near term: stocks up and a steady dollar mean little haven demand for gold. Longer term: only a real financial-stress event (AI valuations, debt) gives gold back its haven bid in a high-rate world.
