Gold macro brief, Oct 23, 2026 – Spot gold drops 2.8% to $4,024.55, lowest since July 20, as an oil spike and an AI sell-off push money into Treasuries instead of bullion
Spot gold drops 2.8% to $4,024.55, lowest since July 20, as an oil spike and an AI sell-off push money into Treasuries instead of bullion
Investing.com: spot gold settled Oct 22 at $4,024.55/oz (−2.8%), its lowest since July 20, while futures settled at $4,039.90 (−0.5%). It's the third break below $4,100 support this month. Trade Nation's David Morrison notes this week's selling came despite a sizable drop in the dollar, and daily MACDs haven't reached the oversold readings that usually fuel durable rallies. Peter Schiff: gold lost $116 and closed just above $4,000 support. CNBC's XAU= quote at 7:35 PM ET: $4,023.61 (day range 4,020.59–4,122.56).
Gold impact: Near term: sellers own the tape below 4,100, and 4,000 is the line in the sand – lose it and the July lows come into play. Rallies into 4,100 look like selling opportunities. Friday brings flash PMIs at 9:45 AM ET and UMich sentiment at 10 AM ET. Longer term: as long as $110-plus Brent keeps a December hike priced, gold struggles to trade as a haven even with yields falling.

NYT: US and Israel draw up post-midterm strike plans on Iran; US orders staff out of Saudi Arabia – Brent settles at $113.17, highest since May 4
CNBC: Brent rallied 4% to settle at $113.17 a barrel, its highest since May 4, while WTI gained 2.4% to $99.47 after briefly topping $100. The New York Times, citing US officials, reported that the US and Israeli militaries have specific plans for a "short but intensive" round of strikes on Iran after the Nov. 3 midterms. President Trump said Washington isn't negotiating with Tehran and something will happen "fairly soon." The State Department ordered non-emergency staff out of Saudi Arabia as Houthi attacks escalate; at least two people were killed at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, and Saudi Aramco told staff to evacuate its Dhahran headquarters.
Gold impact: Near term: this escalation is hurting gold, not helping it – the market is trading it through the oil-to-inflation-to-Fed channel rather than as a haven trigger. Longer term: the risk of direct strikes on Iran after Nov. 3 keeps crude elevated; if the conflict spills into broader financial stress, haven flows could rotate back into gold.

10-year yield plunges 19 bps to 4.953%, biggest drop since March 2023; Nasdaq sinks 2.6% on Meta as jobless claims come in at 194,000
Reuters (via Mint): the 10-year yield fell 19.3 bps to 4.953%, its biggest one-day drop since March 10, 2023 (it peaked at 5.3645% on Oct. 7); the 2-year dropped 18.5 bps to 4.638% and the 30-year sat at 5.287%. The $26 billion 5-year TIPS sale was seen as solid. Initial jobless claims fell 6,000 to 194,000 vs. 200,000 expected. CNBC: the S&P 500 lost 1.2%, its worst day since July; the Nasdaq slid 2.6%, its worst since June; the Dow was flat. Meta fell about 7% after earnings and a new non-voting share class, and Nvidia dropped 4.4%. Cboe: the VIX briefly topped 20 before settling at 18.99.
Gold impact: Near term: a big rally in Treasuries and gold still fell – haven money is choosing bonds, and the AI-driven de-risking is dragging other assets with it. Longer term: a 10-year back under 5% is constructive for gold once the oil shock cools; low claims say the labor market is still holding up.

FedWatch: October hike odds down to 8%; December hike pricing eases to about 75% from roughly 87%
Investing.com's Fed Rate Monitor (CME 30-day fed funds futures, 7:15 PM ET Oct 22): Oct. 28 meeting – 92.0% hold at 3.75%–4.00%, 8.0% for a 25 bp hike (13.8% a day earlier, 28.7% a week ago). Dec. 9 meeting – 25.2% hold (13.2% a day earlier), 69.0% for 4.00%–4.25% and 5.8% for 4.25%–4.50%. Reuters, citing CME FedWatch, put October hike odds at 7.2%, down from 27.7% a week ago. The Fed is in its blackout through Oct. 29; September PCE is due Oct. 29.
Gold impact: Near term: hike bets are cooling with yields, but $113 Brent can flip that quickly – gold hasn't caught a bid from it yet. Longer term: roughly three-in-four odds of a December hike remain; pricing below 50% is what would signal a trend change for gold.
